SIRIUS project. I. Star formation models for star-by-star simulations of star clusters and galaxy formation

چکیده

Abstract Most stars are formed as star clusters in galaxies, which then disperse into galactic disks. Upcoming exascale supercomputational facilities will enable simulations of galaxies and their formation by resolving individual (star-by-star simulations). This substantially advance our understanding cluster formation, assembly histories galaxies. In previous galaxy simulations, a simple stellar population approximation was used. It is, however, difficult to improve the mass resolution with this approximation. Therefore, model for forming that can be used must established. first paper series from SIRIUS (SImulations Resolving IndividUal Stars) project, we demonstrate stochastic star-by-star simulations. An assumed initial function (IMF) is randomly assigned newly model. We introduce maximum search radius assemble surrounding gas particles form particles. study, perform N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics formations turbulent molecular clouds ultra-faint dwarf test cases. The IMF correctly sampled if larger than value estimated threshold density adopted. small clouds, massive highly because number stars. confirm efficiency do not strongly affect results. find naturally reproduce relationship between most total clusters. Herein, models applied varying wide range resolutions.

Star formation in galaxies and star clusters

This thesis is devoted to star formation from galaxy-scales (≈ 10 000 pc) to sub-star cluster-scales (≈ 0.1 pc). I develop and test a new method to derive star formation histories of Galaxies from their star cluster content, in particular the most massive star clusters. This is followed by an application of this method to the Large Magellanic Cloud, where the results of this new method are conf...

Star formation efficiency in galaxy clusters

Context. The luminous material in clusters of galaxies exists in two forms: the visible galaxies and the X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium. The hot intra-cluster gas is the major observed baryonic component of clusters, about six times more massive than the stellar component. The mass contained within visible galaxies is approximately 3% of the dynamical mass. Aims. Our aim was to analyze bot...

Star Formation Efficiencies and Star Cluster Formation

Starbursts produce large numbers of Young Star Clusters (YSCs). Multi-color photometry in combination with a dedicated SED analysis tool allows to derive ages, metallicities, EB−V, and masses including 1σ uncertainties for individual clusters and, hence, mass functions for YSC systems. The mass function, known to be Gaussian for old Globular Cluster (GC) systems, is still controversial for YSC ...

Galaxy Collisions and Star Formation

We present a brief overview of some recent observations of colliding galaxies and relevant numerical simulations. These are compared, and details of the locations and history of collision induced star formation are explored, with possible application to star formation at earlier epochs.

Star Formation and Galaxy Environment

The dependence of star formation rate on galaxian environment is a key issue in the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, the study of this subject is complex and observationally challenging. This paper reviews some of the current results, drawing mostly from recent large redshift surveys such the LCRS, the MORPH collaboration, and the CNOC1 and CNOC2 redshift surveys.
